Pawtucket GOP 2012 Kickoff Breakfast A Success, Mitt Romney Wins Straw Poll

Pawtucket – The Pawtucket Republican City Committee hosted a successful 2012 Kickoff Breakfast and Presidential Straw Poll at Pawtucket’s Comfort Inn on Saturday, January 21st. The event, which drew conservatives from across Rhode Island, featured US Senate candidate Barry Hinckley and Republican Party chairs from Warren, Lincoln and East Providence.

Event chairman Scott Rotondo’s opening remarks stressed the importance of the 2012 elections, saying “Our country has doubled its national debt in the past four years; our state continues to shed jobs month after month, and our city needs to borrow against next year’s taxes to finance this year’s deficit. If we produced these kinds of results in our jobs, we would be fired. Well, I say it’s time we start firing these people”.

The winner of the Pawtucket GOP 2012 Presidential Straw Poll by a slim margin is Mitt Romney with 31.7% of the vote. Rick Santorum was a close second with 29.3%, followed by Newt Gingrich with 19.5% and Ron Paul with 17.1%. Despite not being a candidate for president, Barry Hinckley still picked up 2.4% of the vote.

CAR TAX

If you are like me, you have been following with a great degree of interest the testimony and progress on the Pension Reform Bill. Reform is a complicated, contentious, and important discussion. Pensions represent the single greatest issue facing the future stability of Rhode Island.

However, there is an issue facing residents of Pawtucket which is having an impact on our wallets right now. Taxes.

The burden on tax payers has steadily increased over the past few years. The City of Pawtucket recently lowered the car tax exemption to just $500, which brings this tax to the forefront of our discussion.

Controlling runaway spending is a long-term solution to high taxes, we have allowed our City Council to spend in excess. Two issues, however, are of immediate concern: the unfair values placed on our vehicles and the high tax rate (Pawtucket’s is 2^nd Highest in RI).

At $53.30 per 1,000 of valuation, Pawtucket boasts the 2nd highest car tax rate in Rhode Island.

Pawtucket has been pretty quiet on this issue, perhaps our citizens are speaking with their wallets and simply not paying these excessive tax bills.
